PvP Resilience Changes

It was announced today that there will be a major change to resilience, which is being hotfixed into the game as we approach the new arena season. The change is expected to be in place for the duration of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion; which we take to mean it will not carry over into Cataclysm.

This change will "double the value of resilience in reducing damage done by players," according to Bornakk. Players will see a 10% to 20% reduction in damage taken. However, this change will not affect critical strike chances or critical strike damage. If healing becomes too over powered with this change, Blizzard has a "PvP only solution" ready to go, however they're not rolling out that part of the changes just yet.

The full details after the break.

Reminder: The Crimson Halls open tomorrow

As you heard earlier today, tomorrow morning we're being hit with a maintenance period from 3:00 AM PST until 11:00 AM PST. While we're not expecting a patch tomorrow morning (that's next week), tomorrow's maintenance does herald the opening of another wing of Icecrown Citadel, the Crimson Halls, assuming all goes as planned.

The Crimson Halls highlights the San'layn, the undead blood elven lieutenants of the Lich King. We'll be facing off against the Blood Princes Valanar, Keleseth and Taldaram as one cohesive unit as the first 'boss' before facing down the Blood Queen Lana'thel. Knowledge of these encounters is currently extremely limited, but you can check out our impressions of the Blood Queen encounter as it was on the PTR.

The opening of a new wing also means we'll be getting 5 more attempts at the major bosses in the zone (Deathbringer Saurfang, Professor Putricide, and the Blood Queen) which brings us to a total of 15.

No Sanctuary City for Cataclysm

For two expansions we’ve experienced sharing a neutral sanctuary city with the opposite faction, with Shattrath City for The Burning Crusade and Dalaran for Wrath of the Lich King. We’ve done this for so long that it really seem so long ago when all we had were our faction capital cities. Finding a member of the opposite faction inside the cities always meant there was some butt kicking to do unlike in the sanctuaries where we can stand beside our foes and not risk getting harmed.

Stormwind City

According to CM Zarhym, there are no plans for a sanctuary city like Dalaran in the Cataclysm expansion. This actually makes sense because we’re not venturing off into a new continent but merely discovering new lands in our old one. This means that our faction capital cities will actually be more populated just like the old days. But I wouldn’t say that Dalaran will be useless when the expansion hits. Shattrath City became a ghost town when WoTLK came not because there’s no use for it but because Dalaran was a more useful place being in Northrend and giving us access to the faction capitals like Shattrath did. I predict that a lot of people will still call Dalaran their home when the expansion hits because everyone can simply hearth there and use the portals to travel easier just like we do now. We can even use to Dalaran portal to the Caverns of Time to travel to Tanaris faster!

Not having a shared city for the expansion has me thinking about possible implications to professions. In the past we always went to the next continent to train and level up our professions for the content of that expansion. We’d go to Thrallmar or Honor Hold to start off for TBC then move on the Shattrath when we get there. Then we’d go to our respective camps in Howling Fjord or Borean Tundra to start training and leveling up for WoTLK and eventually move over to Dalaran. With the content moving back to Azeroth for Cataclysm, where would we train up our professions? Will the trainers in the faction capitals suddenly be able to teach us stuff past 450? If that’s the case, that would make trainers in the Outlands and Northrend almost pointless unless we have special trainers in the faction capitals who you can only talk to if you’re ready for the Cataclysm profession levels.

That being said, it’s actually a bit fun to find more use for our faction cities just like the old times but it’s also nice to know that we can always set our hearth to Dalaran for easy traveling!

Patch 3.3 PTR: Patch notes updated: Halls of Reflection

A new round of updated PTR patch notes have been released this afternoon for patch 3.3. There's only one update, but it's a large and important one for the folks on the PTR:
  • General: Halls of Reflection in Icecrown Citadel available for testing. All three wings of the 5-player dungeon are currently available for testing.
Halls of Reflection is the third and final wing of the 5-man dungeons opening up in Patch 3.3. These dungeons, including the Pit of Saron and the Forge of Souls will offer the best 5-man loot currently available in the game. When they're combined with the new dungeon matchmaking system, everyone should be quite happy to run them as often as they want.

We'll have more information on the dungeon once the PTR come back up later today.

Patch 3.3 is the last major patch of Wrath of the Lich King. With the new Icecrown Citadel 5-man dungeons and 10/25-man raid arriving soon, patch 3.3 will deal the final blow to Arthas. WoW.com's Guide to Patch 3.3 will keep you updated with all the latest patch news.

Patch 3.3 PTR: Dwarf, orc, and troll shaman totem gallery

While we have covered the fact that new totems are coming out for orcs and trolls in patch 3.3 so that the taurens don't have to keep sharing with everyone. We've also mentioned the fact that dwarf totems have been added into the PTR files for when Cataclysm hits. At the time, we only had the front view images from MMO-Champion. This caused a bit of an issue with the Dwarf totems as it's hard to distinguish what exactly they're supposed to look like without a side view. So, after some datamining and image editing of our own, we've put together a little gallery of the new totems for you all to enjoy.

NPD: World of Warcraft has sold 8.6 million boxes at retail

Gamasutra has received an interesting stat from the good folks at NPD: after hearing that The Sims 3 sold over 800,000 copies in its first month, they were curious to see what kind of unit sales our own World of Warcraft has experienced. And the numbers are pretty big: among the original game and all of the expansion packs since the vanilla release over four years ago, NPD says 8.6 million boxes of WoW have been sold in the US. That's a little misleading if you're comparing it to actual subscription numbers: remember that this is over three different releases (so the actual number of all-time players, not current players, is probably 1/3 of that), and it includes different collectors' editions of each of the three game editions. So there are nowhere near 8.6 million US players of WoW -- that's just how many times players have come through the retail line with the various releases.

What that is, however, is a lot of money. Gamasutra estimates that at an average of $30 for each unit sold (the vanilla game currently retails at $20, but the expansions all sell at $40, and of course the original game was more expensive once upon a time), that's $258 million in income for Blizzard. In short, Blizzard's making a mint at the retail counter, even before they sign anyone up for subscriptions.

Then again, if you look at their own costs, those aren't insubstantial, either -- Activision's Bobby Kotick claimed that anyone starting up an MMO to compete with WoW would have to throw at least half a billion dollars into the mix just to get started, so we can presume Blizzard has spent at least $500 million on their staff, development, and hardware. So it's not like they're taking it all to the bank, though we can at least presume they're sitting firmly in the black.

Noblegarden extended to a week on the PTR

Elizabeth's wishes have been answered -- in-game Easter holiday Noblegarden has been extended to a full week according to the calendar on the PTR. That's six more days to run around getting eggs, not to mention doing all of the new Noblegarden achievements being included in the holiday. In the past, Noblegarden hasn't meant that much to players -- the rewards were never that great, and the fact that it was on only one day (a day usually reserved by most celebrating for family dinners away from the game) made it much less active than it could have been. But Blizzard has revamped the holiday, apparently, so be on the lookout for some eggs and bunnies starting on Sunday, April 12th.

One quick note for those of you worried about your Violet Proto-drakes: apparently still none of the Nobelgarden quests are included in the meta achievement. So there won't be any Bags of Candy or monthly Brews to get -- just enjoy the festivities.

And we'll give a shout-out to Kisirani here as well -- since she took over World Events on the Blizzard team, we've seen some great changes. Despite the issues with the Zombie launch event for Wrath, it was still a ton of fun, and we're pretty sure that she and her team also been behind the popular Brewfest and Hallow's End holidays as well. Excellent work -- we can't wait to see what the new Noblegarden is like.

WoW Patch 3.1 PTR Death Knight Changes

Good Morning Death Knights! As expected, we got a pretty long list of changes for Death Knights. The frost tree has received some extensive and actually somewhat shocking reshuffling, and there's a few other unexpected but interesting changes. It's good to be mindful that these changes are still in flux. We'll probably see more changes and perhaps some reversion of these changes depending on what happens. It's worth noting that MMO Champion currently has undocumented changes and a completely different 3.1 DK Talent tree up that doesn't even match the one suggested in the patch notes, so we can't say for sure if the patch notes are already outdated. But for now, we're going to focus on the patch changes for the most part. So, let's dive right in.
